What DID is NOT!
What DID is not!
- DID is not fairly represented in movies and shows. DID is a trauma diagnosis and you cannot have it without serious trauma. So no, we’re not dangerous at all! It’s more the contrary, other people have hurt us and taken advantage of us, thus we became dissociative... Maybe we can be harmful to ourselves if we’re triggered by trauma reminders, though.
- DID is not the same as having a psychosis. A psychosis mainly consists of hallucinations and such as visible things or “voices” that don’t belong to that person, whilst DID consists of alters that are a part of our personhood. We can take on different parts from within, but we’re not “disconnected from reality” in the same way a psychotic person is.
- DID is not as it was called long ago: “multiple personalities”. Because we are one person and no part is a “stranger”. Having other personalities is like saying someone else takes over your body, and that is not happening! We are many in one.
- DID is not insanity. It’s a developed system of parts that was developed for the purpose of protecting the person from getting further hurt by traumatizing experiences.
- DID is not always visible in public. Sometimes we dissociate on the inside.
- Having alters/parts is not harmful to the person. Each part had a purpose for being created that helped the person survive their experiences.
- DID is not just "fictional imaginary voices in the head". I know many creators on TikTok and on other places, say they have DID and can make complex systems and claim the most distrubing things about their parts or alters. While I don't condone endogenic systems (systems that aren't linked to trauma) and I simply don't think endo's are real, I don't want to be that person who says a trauma survivor can't deal with their trauma in their own way!
